Welcome to the 2022 Wyoming County Fair.
The 36th renewal of the county fair will still be in Meshoppen Township, where it’s been since 1991, when the Tunkhannock Kiwanis purchased 231 acres of property along Route 6.
The Kiwanis had restarted the county fair in 1986, after it was a casualty of World War II when it closed in 1942 as resources were directed elsewhere.
Fair vice president Laura Anderson said, “Our goal is to continue to offer up a bigger and better fair each year.”
The local fair board also embraces the state Department of Agriculture’s theme for fairs across Pennsylvania: ‘Working together to keep the tradition alive.’
Marge Singer remains as president, Laura Anderson is vice president, Pam Burke is secretary, and Stephanie Whipple continues as treasurer.
Anderson said the officers acknowledge and are grateful to the Tunkhannock Kiwanis for taking on in 1985 a county fair as one of its projects for the next year.
She added that last summer’s issues with a soggy parking lot are hopefully in the rear view mirror, with access roads to most parking now paved.
Most everything about the fair remains same as last year, with a little tweaking. The fair opens each day at 10 a.m., and the fair closes each night at 11 p.m., except for Wednesday and Thursday when it closes at 9, and Monday when it closes at 6.
The long-held tradition of having the horse pulling contests on Labor Day Monday his again moved up to the opening day of the fair.
Wednesday and Monday are designated as Senior Citizens Days, and those 62 and older get in the fair for free.
Saturday is also Veterans Day, and veterans and all active duty military personnel get in the fair free that day.
The ‘Farmer for a Day’ area remains popular as children of all ages can learn where farm fresh products really come from. Organizers note there continues to be a modest change in some of the 4-H events so they are not loaded up to a specific day, and the public should be able to enjoy a vast array of animal shows at this year’s fair with participation in some areas continuing to increase.
But because of avian flu issues, the Department of Agriculture has shut down all poultry displays at fairs across the Commonwealth.
Also important is the Livestock Sale, held once again on Saturday with organizers grateful for an increase in the number of bidders last year and they hope it keeps picking up steam..
It is clear that many 4-H projects in the exhibit hall will be on the increase because of active involvement of youths in the county.
In fact, anyone who sees a project that they would like to pursue — including raising animals — is welcome to call the Penn State Extension office at 570-836-3196.
For those who like rodeo events, this year’s fair will once again see a return of the High School Rodeo on Sunday evening and Monday afternoon in a competition sanctioned by the New York High School Rodeo Association. It features breakaway roping, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and cutting, as well as bronco and bull riding.
Music sensations Jimmie Allen on Friday night and LiveWire on Saturday night headline the entertainment lineup of this year’s fair, which runs Aug. 31-Sep. 5.
Separate tickets for the Friday and Saturday concert shows were available at press time and can be ordered online.
Back this year is a Concert Beer Garden. Come wet your whistle at the Beer Garden during Friday’s and Saturday’s concerts, but note that admission to the garden is free for concert guests 21 years of age and older with a Photo ID required for entry. No cooler or outside alcohol is permitted. The Wyoming County Fair is one of 110 fairs across Pennsylvania this summer and fall.
Preparation for the fair is almost year round, and Anderson notes that all systems are go for the 2022 installment.
The official welcome/ opening ceremonies will take place Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Veterans Pavilion. It will precede the crowning of a new Wyoming County Fair Queen.
In addition to the headliner country music, other entertainment spread throughout the 6-day event this year includes local bands performing each day along with some top-notch fun entertainment including ‘Cowboy Circus, ‘Human Cannonball Daredevils,’ and ‘Wheels of Agriculture.’
Once again this year, the Midway will feature spectacular rides from Jim Houghton Enterprises. There will be rides for every age group, such as a Merry-Go-Round, Round-Up, The Himalaya, Pharaoh’s Fury, and more.
Also, several new vendors will make their debut at the 2022 Fair, as well as many of the well known food, craft, educational, and informational vendors.
Fair tickets at the gate are $10 for a daily pass, and children under two years old get in free.
Pre-sale tickets (Aug. 30 or before are $8 daily and ticket price includes admission, parking, and rides all day.
